Farming on the plains

   Farming on the Great Plains was especially difficult for the homesteader. For one thing, the climate was one of extremes, with freezing winters and scorching summers. For another thing, although the flatness of the land made plowing easier, the soil was very hard.
   The main problem facing the Plains farmer was lack of water. There were few rivers in this region, and annual rainfall was often below the 20 inches (50 centimeters) generally needed to sustain agriculture. There was water underground, but it was usually inaccessible, either too deep or trapped beneath impenetrable rock.
